1999 VW Bug transmission question?

My car will hardly switch gears and it is using a ton of rpms. Is there anything I can do besides getting a new or rebuilt transmission?

If it is an automatic, check to see if you have tranny fluid. Done by leaving the car running in park and removing the dipstick(read your manual to get the pictures) No oil, no go.
It is called maintenance"kinda like brushing your teeth" - you got to do it or suffer the consequences.

If it is a standard transmission(one with a clutch pedal) then it sounds like you wore out the clutch. Transmission is OK. The clutch is a part that joins/or seperates the transmission and the engine. Like brake pads. They do wear out....and need to be replaced occasionally. If you do not know how to drive a standard properly, or continuously towing a trailer - this will cause premature wear on a clutch disc. Never be afraid to ask how to drive it right. A clutch could last over 100K miles when driven right or could go in less than 30K when driven wrong.
