95 saturn transmission,bad design?

i have a 5 speed manual transmission.the area where the input shaft(shaft clutch disc rides on) goes into the tranny started leaking fluid.i thought it was just a bad seal.but when i did some searching on the car,i found out that there is not just a seal its a sealed bearing that is bad and unlike your old/traditional type tranny,you have to split tha case to change the bearing.i went to the local well known transmission shop to get a bearing and the owner of the shop said im wasting my time and my best bet is to just get another tranny.he even said that my type of tranny is a peice of crap and said he wouldnt even rebuild one at his shop.sure i can easily find this tranny used and cheap but i dont wanna keep changing it or take a risk of getting one that will go bad in a short time.i think rebuilding the tranny is best.so are these trannys junk?whats your thoughts.

I don't think it's a bad designed transmission at all. The part you are referring to is the "quill bearing". Yeah, I've replaced a few, but the transmissions are very well designed and are pretty much indestructible. The only time I had to rebuild one is when someone put gear lube in it instead of the correct fluid. The bearing has to be pressed in after the case is split. Find another trans shop who can do it for you. Good Luck!
