Can you turn a car with automatic transmission to standard?

I was wondering if it is possible to put standard transmission into an automatic. I'm looking at a car that's automatic but I'd like a standard. The car is a great deal so I may buy it. Is this even possible? If so, how much am I looking at for price?

By the way, the car is a VW Golf.

You can turn a transmission into auto or manual by changing the transmission. But if you want a manual transmission, buy a car with it. Unless you have money to burn this is not a good idea to change them as it will cost a lot to do and make them look right. If not done right it will lower the value of your car a lot.
