what gear should you be in if you are racing a manual transmission and you are on the line?

in order to make a manual trasmission car jump off the line if you are drag racing what gear are you in while you are siting on the line and what gear do you shift into first to get a faster jump off to beat a automatic car

1st gear. Its the best gear to "launch" the car, get it moving, get the RPMs up, and then quickly shift into 2nd gear.

However, this all depends on being able to get traction or "hook" as its called at the track. Without that you're just spinning your wheels.
